Search Engine Optimisation
One of the most critical components in ensuring that your site can be found on the web is good On and Off page Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).
SEO usually refers to the techniques and practises employed to make sure your site ranks higher on the major search engines, such as Google, Bing and Yahoo, than your competitors. And being on page 1 is very important.
SEO is not a black science, and is more about using repeatable techniques, and having good quality, interesting content that readers will be drawn to. The optimsation techniques then offer the best chance for your content to be indexed and found, and be widely read.
On Page SEO refers to the actual work you can do on your site, such as the domain names, the url, the headings and the copy you actually create. Off page SEO is more about finding quality pages and having them link to you. There are directories and many other linking sites out there, but the key is to look carefully at the sites you have linking to you and ensure they attract the right kind of attention you are looking for. Highly linked sites, that are actually part of link rings tend to be poor places to gain links from.
